2017 Martin Ray Cooper Garrod Syrah, Santa Cruz Mountains
George Cooper and Jan Garrod planted their first vines in 1972 with guidance from their neighbor, the legendary Martin Ray himself. A relationship we’ve maintained over the decades as a source for some excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, we were excited to receive Syrah from their tiny two-acre block in 2017.

The abundant sunshine this south-facing parcel receives is moderated by its position under the fog line on shallow clay soils, creating a subtle balance of fruit and savory elements in the elegant wine.
Record setting rain and cooler temperatures lengthened dormancy, with first signs of budbreak mid-March. Hotter than average days brought Harvest mid-August with lower than average yields.
Brambly cherry and plum with fresh cinnamon spice and hints of salumi lead into a youthfully muted palate of red fruit, pepper, and cured meats. Fine tannins up front and good acid keep this new, limited-production wine fresh and lively, indicating a long period of complex development and drinking pleasure ahead.
