CASE - 2017 Martin Ray Coast Grade Pinot Noir
Made to pay tribute to our heritage and Martin Ray’s history with Pinot Noir, this wine exemplifies a true Burgundian profile, with a lean, acid driven core, firm but silky tannins, and earthy tones throughout.
Coast Grade Vineyard
Set amongst redwoods on Bonny Doon Road, this vineyard sits on high stony slopes of the coastal side of the Santa Cruz Mountains. With morning and evening fog, the fruit receives perfect conditions to reach optimum ripeness.
100% Pinot Noir
Record setting rain and cooler temperatures lengthened dormancy, with first signs of budbreak mid-March. Hotter than average days brought Harvest mid-August with lower than average yields.
Fermented separately in small open-top fermenters with gentle punch-downs. Maintained at moderate temperatures until dry, basket-pressed, and racked to 40% new French oak for 14 months.
Deep wild cherry, fresh pomegranate and black raspberry layered with earthy notes of forest floor and mushroom. Herbaceous sage and tinges of red chili powder and nutmeg carry through lending a savory balance to the silky layers and focused acidity.
