2018 Martin Ray Estate Rosé of Pinot Noir
The fourth vintage from our Estate Pinot Noir vineyard yielded a phenomenal crop with high yields and excellent quality from our Estate on the Laguna Ridge. Made entirely from Clone 828, we culled a few tons from our this lower block, early in the season to produce our Estate Rosé.
From start to finish, 2018 was a very steady season, offering weather that was reminiscent of years prior to drought. Budbreak came later in the spring with very little concern about frost, leading into steady growing temperatures with occasional rain. There were intermittent heat spikes in June and July, though not prolonged, pushing the season along. August was temperate, allowing slow ripening and complex flavors to develop. Higher than average yields and excellent quality brought about a fruitful harvest beginning in late August.
After careful sampling and testing in the field, we went through vine-by-vine and only picked a few tons from our three blocks, from the vines we felt were the most developed. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed on a long gentle cycle to a chilled stainless tank. In an effort to fully display our unique Estate aromas and flavors, we allowed the wine to ferment with its native yeast, and stopped fermentation immediately upon dryness to preserve the bright fruit and acid.
The combination of clones and the intricacies resulting from the native ferment have resulted in a gorgeous Rosé, abundant with fresh nectarine and white peach, wild strawberry, and ruby red grapefruit zest. Aromatic and fresh throughout, with subtle notes of cherry blossom and cranberry skin on the finish. This wine will surely pair amazingly with food as well as being an ideal easy drinker for an afternoon on the porch, with its juicy mouthfeel, and precise acidity.
