2016 Martin Ray Olivet Lane Chardonnay
A rare and new addition to our portfolio, this famed vineyard produces some of the most sought after fruit in the Russian River Valley. Situated in the heart of the valley on the Laguna de Santa Rosa plain
just off Olivet Road, this area is distinguished by it’s low lying fog and extended growing season. Planted by the Pelligrini family in 1975 to Wente Clone Chardonnay, these 40 plus year old vines yield vivid, highly complex fruit with vibrant acidity.
The 2016 vintage carried through from beginning to end, with ideal conditions and ideal results. Long-awaited rainfall during the winter and early spring replenished desperate reservoirs and ground water, easing the concerns generated by several years’ worth of drought conditions. The summer was kind, with only a few heat spikes, which then carried over into a true Indian Summer; keeping daytime temperatures above normal, and the mornings foggy and cool throughout the peak month of September, permitting us to take our time in evaluating and calling picks at their optimal maturity. Nature patiently waited for us to bring in our final lots before returning with the rain that has traditionally been the signal for the end of the harvest season. Harvested September 17th.

The result is a wine that is racy and vibrant with full fruit character. Notes of honeycomb and quince give way to lemon meringue pie, fresh apple skin with multiple layers of citrus. Racy on the palate, this ripe fruit core is backed by satsuma peel, subtle toasted hazelnut. Fervent and highly textured, there is a distinctive minerality with a lean backbone that will show the test of time.
