2015 Russian River Valley, Rosé
Our Martin Ray Rosé of Pinot Noir comes in small amounts from nearly all of our premium Russian River and Green Valley vineyards. Because each vineyard is picked at its ideal ripeness to maximize the flavors of our Pinot Noir, the subsequent Rosé also takes on a complex bouquet and palate.
The culmination of factors from another draught year in California surprised us with another wonderful vintage. An unseasonably dry and warm winter, which led to an early spring, forced the vines into bud break during peak frost season. However, the spring weather stayed mild during fruit set and led into a relatively warm summer which hastened ripening to unprecedented early harvest dates. Our white varietals came in with ideal sugar and perfect flavor, and both our Pinot Noirs and Cabernets alike, showed up with almost comically tiny clusters which produced super concentrated flavors and color. Although the crop, overall, was lighter (and much, much earlier), than we've seen in several years, the outstanding quality of the fruit and resulting wines cannot be understated.
This wine is produced by saignee method, in which we pick ripe, flavorful fruit, crush it to a stainless steel tank, and allow 6-8 hours of contact with the skins to achieve optimal color and flavor extraction. We drain the juice to several tanks inoculating some with a specialized Rhone yeast, and others with yeasts to enhance the natural color and fruit character throughout fermentation.
This wine blossoms with a complex and fruit-driven bouquet featuring high tone tropical and citrus notes such as blood orange, kiwi, passion fruit and coconut, coupled with more delicate aromas of watermelon and orange crème. In a constant effort to over-deliver, our Rosé is dominated by a round front and midpalate, that is fruit-driven, but dry. It has well-balanced, refreshing acidity around the edges and a clean refined finish.
