2014 Martin Ray Puccioni Vineyards Zinfandel
Our Dry Creek Zinfandel comes entirely from Puccioni Vineyards situated on the hills of the western Dry Creek Valley. The appellation has a special reputation for its robust Zinfandel, and this is no exception. Often one of the last lots to ripen, it is worth the wait in its development of its opulent concentrated flavors.
The 2014 vintage was challenging due to drought, but produced amazing fruit with smaller clusters and lower yields. An ideal harvest with consistently moderate temperatures and weather conditions, allowed the vines and fruit to stay healthy and maintain concentrated flavors and exceptional quality.
Our Zinfandel grapes are carefully hand-sorted and destemmed into a small open-top fermenter where they are cold-soaked for up to 4 days before being inoculated with a voracious Rhone yeast developed to be able to withstand the high natural sugars of the Zinfandel while promoting the signature jammy fruit aromas. It ferments at warm temperatures for 10-15 days, then basket pressed and racked to a carefully chosen combination of primarily French oak barrels, with a small portion of Hungarian and American for 16 months of aging.
This stellar example of the quality of Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel is overflowing with aromas of raspberry jam, maraschino cherry, floral rose petals, and the sweet spiciness of cloves and nutmeg with a distinct undertone of graphite earthiness. The mediumbody is substantial without being cloying, while the precise combination of oak types bolster the complexity of this delicious wine.
