2014 Martin Ray Estate Pinot Noir
The very first vintage from our homesite vineyard planted in 2011 yielded only about 3 tons of fruit, total. A combination of seven different clones and a comparatively early pick yielded a stellar debut we had no choice but to showcase.
Due to the small amount, we destemmed the grapes into open-top French oak puncheons to undergo fermentation. Once finished with primary, the puncheons were drained and basket-pressed to barrels for malo-lactic fermentation. To preserve this wine's bright red fruit profile, we only aged it for 11 months on 35% new French oak barrels.
Fresh and elegant, this wine overwhelms with aromas of tart cranberries, fresh bing cherries, and wild raspberries, underscored by notes of orange blossoms, rose petals, and a graphite minerality. Red fruit driven flavors throughout with snappy, bright acidity, and a slight suggestion of well-integrated vanilla and caramel from the French oak. Juicy and clean, but definitive.
