1.5L 2016 Martin Ray Synthesis Cabernet Sauvignon
Our Synthesis Cabernet Sauvignon is the ideal culmination of our favorite vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. Drawing from the bright red, earthiness of our Rutherford vineyards, as well as the tannic and acid driven fruit from Rutherford and Stags Leap, along with the plush characteristics from Coombsville, this wine is the perfect marriage of the contrasting styles. Synthesis, in essence, flaunts the finest characteristics from each of its diverse origins.
Much to the delight of both grape growers and winemakers, the 2016 vintage carried through from beginning to end, with ideal conditions and ideal results. Long-awaited rainfall during the winter and early spring replenished desperate reservoirs and ground water, easing the concerns generated by several years’ worth of drought conditions. The summer was kind, with only a few heat spikes, which then carried over into a true Indian Summer; keeping daytime temperatures above normal, and the mornings foggy and cool throughout the peak month of September, permitting us to take our time in
evaluating and calling picks at their optimal maturity. Nature patiently waited for us to bring in our final lots before returning with the rain that has traditionally been the signal for the end of the harvest season.
Our Synthesis is, quite literally, the best of the best. We hand-picked the best of the barrel lots from our favorite vineyards to make this expressive wine. We fermented the grapes in small 5 ton open top fermentation tanks for two weeks with pumpovers for cap management, then aged it for eighteen months in 60% new French oak barrels.
True to its origins, Synthesis has a complex bouquet of allspice and pine with bold red and purple fruits along the lines of Kirsch, black currant, and elderberry. The Bordeaux blenders add a complementary hint of graphite and cocoa dust. The Synthesis Cabernet Sauvignon blend is a beautiful compromise between the softer, more earthy profile of Rutherford and sinewy tannins that come from Stags Leap District.
